The Elden Ring Tarnished Edition idus sword has two reliable acquisition paths. New characters can select the Idus Knight starting class, while existing characters can collect the weapon from a corpse in southern Liurnia of the Lakes. This makes the sword accessible without depending on a late-game boss, invasion, or questline.

For an existing character, begin at the Liurnia Lake Shore Site of Grace. Travel northwest across the lake region and watch for a corpse resting beside a tree. The weapon is placed directly on that body, so the pickup is easier to identify once you reach the correct shoreline route.

The matching armor has a separate location. You can obtain it at character creation with the Idus Knight class, or purchase it from the Nomadic Merchant in north Liurnia. The merchant stands east of the ravine leading toward the Ruin-Strewn Precipice.

Use the following route if you are collecting the weapon on a character that did not begin as an Idus Knight. The path focuses on reaching the southern Liurnia pickup before spending time on the matching armor or other Tarnished Edition additions.

The key navigation mistake is searching near the northern merchant for the weapon itself. The merchant sells the armor, while the sword is placed separately in southern Liurnia. Treat these as two stops rather than one combined location.

The Idus Knight is the most direct way to begin with the new weapon and its visual theme. Selecting the class during character creation grants the Idus Sword and the associated armor set immediately, allowing the build to develop around the weapon from the opening areas.

Players using an existing character have more flexibility. You can collect the sword in southern Liurnia and decide later whether the matching armor fits your equipment load, defenses, or preferred fashion setup. The armor can be purchased from the north Liurnia Nomadic Merchant without restarting the character.

The starting-class route is convenient, but it is not the only practical option. The world pickup means a character built around another starting class can still use the weapon once the Liurnia route becomes available.

The names and locations of the new weapons can cause confusion. The Idus Sword is the early-access weapon associated with the Idus Knight class and the southern Liurnia corpse. Leontiel’s Greatsword is a different weapon obtained after defeating Starscourge Radahn and defeating the Leontiel invasion near the War-Dead Catacombs area.

This distinction matters when searching guides or planning progression. If you are specifically looking for the Idus Sword, you do not need to defeat Radahn. If your goal is Leontiel’s Greatsword, the Caelid invasion route is required instead.

The Leontiel encounter also has a progression connection to the Radahn fight: Leontiel can assist during the boss battle, then later invade in the arena area after Radahn is defeated. That sequence is unrelated to the southern Liurnia Idus Sword pickup.

When reviewing equipment lists, check the weapon name carefully. “Idus Sword,” “Idus Greatsword,” and “Leontiel’s Greatsword” may appear together in Tarnished Edition coverage, but they refer to different acquisition paths.

Use this checklist to secure the weapon, matching armor, and the information needed to avoid a duplicate trip. The sword itself is the priority for players building around the weapon, while the armor can be collected afterward based on equipment preferences.

The route is especially useful for an established character because it avoids a mandatory boss sequence. Once the weapon is collected, you can return to your normal progression and test its moveset against enemies suited to your build.

For a new character, choosing Idus Knight removes the need to travel for the initial sword and armor. However, later characters and alternate builds can still obtain the same themed gear through the separate Liurnia locations.
